Dear Minister,

I am writing to express my deep concern about Endeavour Energy’s proposed plans to use unlicensed workers to install community batteries.
Endeavour Energy is planning to put the public at risk by installing their new community batteries without using licensed electricians. This is a life-threatening, cost-cutting move by Endeavour Energy, and I am asking you to make sure that corporate profits do not come at the cost of public safety.

Community batteries are an important part of Australia’s renewable energy future, and I support their role in helping us transition to cleaner power. However, this progress must not come at the cost of safety. To avoid paying the highly skilled workers needed, Endeavour Energy is pushing to allow unlicensed workers to install community batteries located in our public parks, playgrounds, and residential streets.

Endeavour Energy appears to be planning to bypass the use of licensed, highly skilled electricians in favour of unlicensed workers who aren’t qualified to test that the batteries are safe. These batteries store large amounts of electricity, and improper installation could result in serious injury or even death. If these installations go ahead as proposed, there’s a real risk to children, families, and electrical workers. These brightly painted batteries will be easily accessible and potentially deadly if not installed correctly.

There are also indications that installing the batteries in this manner may bypass the manufacturers' safety guidelines. If that happens, it would represent a blatant disregard for safety standards and industry best practices. Ignoring manufacturer requirements can void product warranties, meaning the taxpayer and Endeavour customers will be on the hook for any defects or faults in the future. This kind of shortcut must not be allowed.

Taxpayer-funded grant dollars, awarded to Endeavour to improve our power network with community batteries, are being exploited. Electricity prices are still going up in NSW, with a big chunk of our power bills going towards companies like Endeavour to keep the network safe and operational. Instead of investing in skilled local workers and proper installations, our money ends up benefiting overseas investors, while public safety is compromised. Why should our communities bear the risk, while others reap the profits?
I write as a member of the community and as a concerned citizen. You must force Endeavour Energy to meet their obligations and not let this proposed practice go ahead.
Please ensure that Endeavour Energy is held to the highest safety and accountability standards. Community batteries must be installed correctly, by qualified professionals, in accordance with all safety regulations.
